    The Washington Capitals ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, won the Eastern Conference championship on Saturday, defeating Cincinnati 3-1 in Game 5 of the best-of-seven series. With the win the Royals captured the E.A. ‘Bud’ Gingher Memorial Trophy, as the Eastern Conference Playoff Champions, and will make their first Kelly Cup final appearance in franchise history.

    Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will address the media today at 2:15 p.m. outside the Capitals locker room. The Capitals will hold their final 2012-13 media availability session of the season on Wednesday, May 15, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Availability will begin at approximately 10:15 a.m. in the Capitals locker room with video posted on MonumentalNetwork.com and on twitter.com/washcaps. A more detailed schedule, including speaking times for Caps general manager George McPhee and head coach Adam Oates, will be emailed to media later today.

    Washington earned a 2-1 overtime victory last night to take a 3-2 series lead over the New York Rangers. Mike Ribeiro scored the overtime, game-winning goal, his first goal of the postseason and first career playoff goal with Washington. The goal marked Ribeiro’s first career playoff game-winner.

    The Washington Capitals will hold an optional practice today at Kettler Capitals Iceplex at 11 a.m. Yesterday marked Washington’s first postseason shutout since a 2-0 win over the Rangers on 4/15/11. It also marked Washington’s first 1-0 playoff win since 4/12/01 vs. Pittsburgh.

His .59 goals per game ranks second in the league in that span. Ovechkin ranks third all-time in Capitals playoff history in points (59), one behind Mike Ridley for second place. He is tied for the franchise playoff lead in goals with Peter Bondra (30).
