GAME NOTES

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS

Phamiliar phoe – The Capitals and Flyers have matched up 191 times in their history, the third-most games against an opponent in Capitals history. The 72 wins that Washington has accumulated against Philadelphia are the sixth-most that the Capitals have against any opponent.

Class mates – Nicklas Backstrom (fourth overall) and Claude Giroux (22nd overall) were both drafted in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Backstrom has tallied a draft class-leading 371 points in his 372 career games, with 29 of those points (seven goals, 22 assists) coming in 18 career games against the Flyers, his highest point total against any non-Southeast Division team. Giroux’s 247 career points rank him fifth among all players drafted in 2006 and he has recorded eight points (six goals, two assists) in 13 career games against Washington.

Flying high – The Capitals goaltenders have combined for a 2-1-2 record in seven career games against the Flyers. Braden Holtby has compiled a 1-0-1 record with a 1.44 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage in two games against the Flyers, including his first career NHL start on Nov. 7, 2010, at Verizon Center. Michal Neuvirth has compiled a 1-1-1 record with a 2.88 goals-against average in five career games against Philadelphia.

Back-to-backs – Tonight will mark the second half of back-to-backs for the Capitals. Washington fell 3-2 in overtime to New Jersey on the second night of back-to-backs earlier this season and, dating back to last season, has not lost in regulation in the second half of back-to-backs in the last five contests (3-0-2).

Ward heating up – Joel Ward scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season last night against Philadelphia, giving him four goals and two assists in his first seven games and four points (two goals, two assists) in his last four games. Ward didn’t tally his fourth goal of the season last year until his 12th game of the campaign. In seven career games against the Flyers, Ward has collected two goals and two assists.
