Today’s Storyline
The Washington Capitals return home for their first matchup this season against the Florida Panthers tonight at Verizon Center.

The Capitals have not lost to the Panthers in their last five visits to the Verizon Center (1/8/11-4/5/12). Washington has outscored Florida 19-6 during that time, with two of the last three meetings resulting in Caps shutouts. The Capitals outscored the Panthers 11-2 at Verizon Center last season.

Battle on the blueline – Tonight’s matchup will feature two of the top point-producing defensemen over the last five seasons. Since 2007-08, Mike Green ranks fourth among all NHL defenseman in points (242) while Brian Campbell ranks fifth (239). Green leads all blueliners in goals during that span (81) while Campbell ranks second in assists (204).

 

Powering up - The Capitals are 4-for-9 (44.4%) on the power play in their last four games, and they have scored a power-play goal in three consecutive games for the first time since a four-game run from Dec. 30, 2011, to Jan. 7, 2012. Washington ranked 18th in the league in power-play efficiency on Feb. 1 (17.9%), and with its current run now ranks 12th in the NHL (21.4%) in that category.  

 

Saturday night fever – The Capitals went 5-0-1 in Saturday home games last season and outscored their opponents 21-12 in those six contests. Tonight marks the first of four Saturday home games for Washington this season, with half of those four games coming this month with the other two coming in April.

 

O for Ovi – Alex Ovechkin tallied two points (one goal, one assist) on Feb. 7 at Pittsburgh and has now tallied one goal and three assists during his current three-game point streak. The Capitals captain has tallied 51 points (24 goals, 27 assists) in 43 career games against Florida, including five points in five games last season.

 

Trending upward – The Capitals have compiled a 20-8-1 record against Florida in the last 29 matchups and have gone 11-3-0 on home ice in that span. Washington has not lost a season series to the Panthers since the 2005-06 season.
