The Washington Capitals begin a three-game road trip tonight in Florida against the Panthers. The two teams met on Saturday in Washington with the Capitals earning a 5-0 win, their first shutout of the season.
Braden Holtby recorded his fourth career shutout on Saturday vs. Florida. He also assisted on Troy Brouwer’s power-play tally for his second career assist. His last helper, also on the power play, came on 3/15/11 at Montreal. Prior to Saturday, the last time a Washington goaltender contributed a power-play assist was Tomas Vokoun on 12/30/11 vs. Buffalo.

Capitals are 5-for-11 (45.5%) on the power play in their last five games, and
they have scored a power-play goal in four consecutive games for the first time
since a four-game run from Dec. 30, 2011, to Jan. 7, 2012. Washington ranked
18th in the league in power-play efficiency on Feb. 1 (17.9%), and with its
current run now ranks 10th in the NHL (22.7%) in that category.
Battle on the blueline – Tonight’s matchup will feature two of the top point-producing defensemen over the last five seasons. Since 2007-08, Mike Green ranks fourth among all NHL defenseman in points (242) while Brian Campbell ranks fifth (239). Green leads all blueliners in goals during that span (81) while Campbell ranks second in assists (204).
Ovechkin on the rise – Alex Ovechkin scored a goal on Feb. 9 vs. Florida and has now tallied two goals and three assists during his current four-game point streak. The Capitals captain has tallied 52 points (25 goals, 27 assists) in 44 career games against Florida, including five points in five games last season.
Trending upward – The Capitals have compiled a 21-8-1 record against Florida in the last 30 matchups and have gone 9-5-1 in their last 15 road games vs. Florida. Washington has not lost a season series to the Panthers since the 2005-06 season.
Spreading the wealth – 10
different players tallied points for Washington on Saturday vs. Florida while
four different players scored goals. This season 20 different players have
tallied points for the Capitals while 13 players have scored goals for the
Capitals through the first 12 games. Seven of the nine Capitals defenseman to
have appeared in games this season have tallied points this season.
