Today’s Storyline
The Washington Capitals return home to Verizon Center following a three-game road trip that saw the Capitals go 2-1-0.

The Capitals will host the Devils at Verizon Center in each of the teams’ next two games. The last time the Capitals played consecutive games, both at home, against the same opponent was April 5-7, 2006 vs. Carolina. The game before those two games (April 3) was also against the Hurricanes in Raleigh, and all three contests were decided by one goal (courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau).

GAME NOTES

STATS

Busy Braden – Braden Holtby stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced on Sunday against the New York Rangers, the second-highest save total in a single game in Holtby’s career. Sunday marked Holtby’s fourth consecutive start, tying his career high for consecutive regular-season games started. Holtby started four straight contests from March 9-15, 2011.

400 for Ribeiro – Mike Ribeiro collected his 400th career NHL assist on Feb. 17 at New York, becoming the 34th active player to reach that mark. He leads Washington in assists and points and has recorded six multi-point games this season after recording 13 multi-point games last season. Ribeiro currently ranks sixth among his 1998 draft class in assists.

A devil of a time – The Capitals are 3-1-1 in their last five home games against New Jersey, having outscored the Devils 18-12 in that span. The 92 wins that the Capitals have in team history against New Jersey are their second-most wins against any franchise. Washington has earned more points against the Devils (209) in its franchise history than against any other NHL team.

Snipers – Alex Ovechkin (344) and Ilya Kovalchuk (303) rank first and second, respectively, in goals scored since the 2005-06 season. Ovechkin ranks first in that span in points (689) while Kovalchuk ranks sixth (595). All time among Russian-born skaters in the NHL, Kovalchuk ranks fifth in career points while Ovechkin ranks 12th.

Putting on a show – John Carlson (who spent much of his childhood living in New Jersey) has collected eight points (two goals, six assists) in nine career games against the Devils. The eight career points (tied) and 14 career penalty minutes he has recorded against New Jersey are the most he has tallied against any NHL team.
