Let’s be Fehr – Capitals forward Eric Fehr returns to Winnipeg for the first time since playing for the Jets in 2011-12. Fehr, a native of Winkler, Manitoba, played 35 games for Winnipeg last season and his four goals, three assists and seven points this season have all surpassed his totals from 2011-12. All seven of Fehr’s points were tallied in the month of February, tied for the fifth-most points by a Capital last month.
Ready to Jet – Alex Ovechkin led the Capitals with six points (four goals, two assists) in six games against Winnipeg last season and has recorded 70 points (34 goals, 36 assists) in 49 career games against the Winnipeg franchise, his highest total against any NHL team.
Stake a claim – The Washington Capitals claimed left wing Aaron Volpatti off of waivers on Feb. 28 from Vancouver. Volpatti is the first player claimed off of waivers by Washington since Marco Sturm was claimed from Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 2011. The Capitals’ last waiver claim from Vancouver occurred on Oct. 4, 2005, when they claimed goaltender Brent Johnson from the Canucks. Johnson spent the next four seasons with the Capitals.
Early success – Joel Ward scored Washington’s lone goal on Feb. 27 at Philadelphia, his sixth goal of the season, in his 19th game played in 2012-13. Ward scored six goals total in 2011-12 in 73 games played and is just five points shy of tying his point output from last season. Ward currently leads the Capitals with a plus-nine rating and ranks tied for 22nd in the league in plus/minus.
Making the most – Mike Ribeiro ranks second in the NHL in power-play points with 13 (five goals, eight assists) despite ranking tied for 74th in the league in average power-play ice time per game (3:37). Ribeiro leads all Capitals skaters in power-play points while ranking fifth in power-play ice time per game.
