Today’s Storyline
The Washington Capitals play the second half of back-to-back games today as they host the New York Rangers.

Alex Ovechkin has collected 699 career NHL points in his first eight seasons in the league. Ovechkin is one point shy of becoming just the third player to record 700 points while with Washington and would become just the 22nd player in NHL history to record 700 or more points in their first eight seasons in the league.

STATS

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS

Empire state of mind – The Capitals are 11-6-2 in their last 19 regular-season games against the Rangers and 6-3-1 on home ice. Alex Ovechkin has recorded 29 points (15g-14a) in 29 career games vs. the Rangers.

Afternoon back-to-backs – The Capitals have gone 3-2-0 in afternoon games this season (before 6 p.m.) and 1-1-1 in the second half of back-to-backs. Washington owns a record of 1-0-1 in the second game of back-to-backs following a loss.

Home ice – The Capitals have won each of their last four home games (Feb. 23 – March 7), their first four-game home winning streak of the season and the first since winning seven consecutive home contests from Dec. 20, 2011 – Jan. 15, 2012 of last season.

Streaking – Braden Holtby started 11 consecutive games from Feb. 9 - March 7 vs. Florida. The last Capitals goaltender to start more than 11 straight games was Olie Kolzig, who started 16 consecutive games from Oct. 17, 2003 – Nov. 22, 2003 (courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau).

Explosive offense – The Capitals scored four goals in the game’s first 8:10 on March 7 vs. Florida. That marks the second-fastest four goals scored to start a game in Capitals history. The first came in 6:49 on 1/21/86 vs. the Minnesota North Stars. The four first-period goals tied a season high for a single period while the seven goals scored were a single-game high this season for Washington.
