Today’s Storyline
The Washington Capitals conclude a home-and-home series with the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at PNC Arena in Carolina.

Washington and Carolina have a combined 17 players that played college hockey before their time in the NHL. The Capitals currently boast nine players on their roster that played hockey collegiately, including Jay Beagle (Alaska-Anchorage), Matt Hendricks (St. Cloud), Steven Oleksy (Lake Superior), Tom Poti (Boston U.), Joey Crabb (Colorado College), Aaron Volpatti (Brown), Jack Hillen-IR (Colorado College), Cameron Schilling (Miami) and Joel Ward (P.E.I.).

Against the Canes – Washington is 9-3-2 in its last 14 games overall against Carolina. The Capitals have gone 4-2-0 in their last six road games against the Hurricanes.

Young blueline - All six of the defensemen dressed by Washington on March 12 vs. Carolina previously spent time with Hershey in the AHL, three of which skated together for Washington’s top minor-league affiliate as late as January. Newly recalled Steven Oleksy is the oldest of the six (27), which have an average age of 24.6. Three of the six (Alzner, Carlson and Schultz) were a part of Calder Cup-winning teams with Hershey.

Putting in time – Capitals rookie defenseman Tomas Kundratek skated a career-high 24:13 on March 12 vs. Carolina. Kundratek currently ranks fifth among rookie defensemen in points (7) despite ranking 16th in average ice time (16:41) per game. 

Making the transition – Tonight’s game will feature two head coaches with the most points during their respective playing careers. Adam Oates compiled 1,420 career points as a player, the highest point total among all 30 NHL head coaches. Carolina head coach Kirk Muller ranks second with 959 career points.

Freshman fancy – Capitals prospect Riley Barber (sixth-round draft pick, 167th overall, in 2012) was named to the 2013 CCHA All-Conference First Team as well as the 2013 CCHA All-Rookie Team after leading all NCAA freshman in points (36) and assists (21) this season. Barber led the CCHA in overall scoring adding 15 goals during the regular season, and helped Miami University win the CCHA regular-season title.
