Caps Today, 3/19/13

Posted on March 19, 2013 by Ben Guerrero

Today’s Storyline
The Washington Capitals begin a season-high, four-game road trip tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins at CONSOL Energy Center.

Mike Ribeiro tallied two assists on March 17 vs. Buffalo, including his 16th power-play point of the campaign. Ribeiro led Dallas with 15 power-play points last season and currently is tied for the lead in the NHL in that department, despite only ranking tied for 60th in the league in average power-play ice time per game (3:31). Sunday was Ribeiro’s 10th multi-point game of the season. He recorded 13 games with two or more points last season.

GAME NOTES

STATS

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS

Quick strikes – Alex Ovechkin's goal 0:19 into the game on March 17 vs. Buffalo is the fastest goal scored to start a game for the Capitals this season, and the fastest goal scored to start a game in Ovechkin’s career (previous was 0:26 seconds, courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau). The Capitals scored goals 0:43 seconds apart in the second period on Sunday, the fastest back-to-back goals scored by Washington this season. The Capitals scored three goals on four shots in 5:22 during the second period.

The race to three – Following their 5-3 win over Buffalo on March 17, the Capitals are now 12-2-0 this season when scoring three or more goals in a game. Washington owns an 11-5-1 record when allowing three goals or less this season.

Success in the Steel City – The Capitals have gone 9-1-1 in Pittsburgh in their last 11 road games in the series. Since 2008, the Capitals have gone 13-4-3 with two shootout losses against Pittsburgh.  Alex Ovechkin has registered 39 points (21g-18a) in 30 career games against the Penguins while Nicklas Backstrom has tallied 25 points (one goal, 24 assists) in 20 career games against Pittsburgh.

Perreault pitching in – Mathieu Perreault collected a goal and an assist on March 17 vs. Buffalo, his fourth multi-point game of the season, and has registered three goals and two assists in his last four games. Perreault is one of just four players selected after the third round of his 2006 draft class to have recorded 60 or more career points.

Second and 10 – Braden Holtby recorded his 10th win of the season on March 17 vs. Buffalo, tying a career-high for wins in a single season. Holtby won 10 games in 2010-11 and is one of just four goaltenders (Jim Carey, Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov) in Capitals history to post two or more seasons of 10 or more wins at the age of 23 or younger. Holtby’s 24 career wins rank him sixth in Capitals history among goaltenders originally drafted by Washington.
