GAME NOTES

STATS

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS

Coming in waves – 14 of Washington’s 18 skaters picked up at least a point on March 22 at Winnipeg, including five of the Capitals’ six defensemen. No Caps player was a minus player in the game; 14 players earned plus ratings while four were even. Steven Oleksy and Brooks Laich led the way at plus-3 each. Five different players tallied goals for Washington.

Telling trends – The Capitals are 14-2-0 when they score three or more goals in a game this season. Washington has gone 13-6-1 when allowing three goals or less. The Capitals own a 12-2-0 record when not allowing a power-play goal and have gone 10-1-0 when scoring with the man advantage and not allowing a power-play goal.

Lots to Laich – Brooks Laich returned to the lineup on March 19, making his season debut, and skated 12:51 while recording one shot on goal, three hits and a blocked shot. Laich added his first assist of the season on March 21 at Winnipeg and added his first goal of the season the following night, also against Winnipeg. Prior to this season, Laich had only missed four games in five seasons combined (all coming in 2009-10). He ranks 19th all-time in games played with Washington (559) and 23rd in points (280).

March forward – Braden Holtby has posted a 6-3-0 record with a 1.88 goals-against average, a .940 save percentage and two shutouts in nine games played during the month of March. He recorded his 12th win of the season on March 22 at Winnipeg, extending a career-high for wins in a single season. Holtby won 10 games in 2010-11 and is one of just four goaltenders (Jim Carey, Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov) in Capitals history to post two or more seasons of 10 or more wins at the age of 23 or younger. Holtby’s 26 career wins rank him sixth in Capitals history among goaltenders originally drafted by Washington.

Helping hands – Mike Ribeiro has collected nine points (four goals, five assists) during his current five-game point streak and ranks tied for fourth in the league in assists. Nicklas Backstrom is also riding a five-game point streak, having recorded one goal and five assists in his last five games. Backstrom ranks tied for seventh in the league in assists.
