Caps Today, 4/22/13Posted on April 22, 2013 by Ben Guerrero
The Washington Capitals prepare for the final week of the NHL’s regular season and will practice today at Kettler Capitals Iceplex at 10:30 a.m.
The Capitals currently lead the Winnipeg Jets by three points for first place in the Southeast Division. Washington can clinch the Southeast Division championship with a regulation win over Winnipeg on Tuesday at Verizon Center.
Alex Ovechkin scored twice and added an assist in the Caps 5-1 win over Montreal on Saturday. He currently leads the NHL goal-scoring race (30) by two goals over Steven Stamkos (28). Ovechkin tied an NHL record when he scored the second of his two goals on Saturday night in the Capitals' 5-1 win at Montreal. Ovechkin has racked up 12 goals in 10 games this month, matching the league mark for April goals in one season set by Mario Lemieux in 1993 (in only seven games) and equaled by Winnipeg's Alex Zhamnov in 1995 (courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau).
Nicklas Backstrom added a goal and an assist on
Saturday and ranks third in the league in helpers (39), while ranking tied for
10th in points.
