The Capitals continue their season-long, five-game road trip tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. Washington captain Alex Ovechkin scored two goals on Tuesday against Winnipeg, marking his 78th career multi-goal game. The 6’3”, 235-pound forward ranks fourth among active players in multi-goal games (Teemu Selanne – 130, Jaromir Jagr – 119, Jarome Iginla – 94). Ovechkin has scored 31 goals in his last 30 regular-season games dating back to last season, his highest total during any such span in his NHL career. The Moscow, Russia, native ranks first in the NHL in goals (9) and shots (61), and ranks tied for second in points (13).

Potent Power Play – Washington is 11 for 35 (31.4%) on the power play this season, ranking first in the NHL (through games of Oct. 22). The Capitals’ 11 power-play goals this season are the most Washington has scored in its first nine games of a season since 2001-02 (11).

Holt-beast – Braden Holtby tied his career-high in saves (43) and faced a career-high 47 shots on Tuesday against Winnipeg. In his last six games, Holtby has posted a 3-3-0 record with a 2.33 GAA and a .933 save percentage.

Penalty Kill Prowess – Washington is 27 for 31 (87.1%) on the penalty kill this season, ranking fourth in the NHL (through games of Oct. 22). The Capitals are 14 for 15 (93.3%) on the penalty kill in their last five games, and have killed 13 consecutive power plays. 

Oil Drillers – Braden Holtby earned his first career NHL shutout on March 9, 2011 against the Oilers. Holtby is 2-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .962 save percentage in two career games against Edmonton. Alex Ovechkin has registered 10 points (6g, 4a) in nine career games against Edmonton and Nicklas Backstrom has earned five points (2g, 3a) in five career games against the Oilers. Backstrom registered three assists in Washington’s 4-2 win against Edmonton on Oct. 14 at Verizon Center.

Power Surge – Alex Ovechkin ranks first in the NHL in power-play points (8), tied for first in power-play goals (4) and tied for sixth in power-play assists (4). Eight of Ovechkin’s 13 points this season have been earned on the power play. Nicklas Backstrom ranks tied for first in power-play assists (6) and tied for second in power-play points (7). Seven of Backstrom’s 10 points this season have been earned on the power play. Mike Green ranks tied for third in the NHL in power-play assists (5) and tied for tenth in power-play points (5). All five of Green’s points this season have been earned on the power play (all stats through games of Oct. 22).
