Steven Oleksy and Nate Schmidt each scored a goal on Sunday against the Rangers, marking the second consecutive game and the third time this season two Washington defensemen have scored a goal in the same game. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time two Washington defensemen scored a goal in two consecutive games was during the 1999-00 season, when Calle Johansson and Ken Klee each scored a goal on Nov. 11, 1999, and Klee and Dmitri Mironov each scored a goal on Nov. 13, 1999. Capitals defensemen have scored five of Washington’s last 10 goals and have recorded nine points in Washington’s last four games (11/30-12/8: 5g, 4a).

Washington returns to action tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Verizon Center.

Caps Connections –Washington head coach Adam Oates was an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2009-10 season. During his time with Tampa Bay, Oates was in charge of the power play and offensive strategies. Under Oates’ direction, the Lightning went 63 for 326 (19.3%) on the power play, ranking eighth in the NHL.

 

Grabin’ Points –Mikhail Grabovski scored a goal on a penalty shot on Sunday against the Rangers, marking his sixth point in his last five games (11/29-12/8: 2g, 4a). Grabovski has scored nine goals in 30 games this season, matching his goal total from last season (48 games). The 5’11”, 183-pound center ranks second in the NHL in shooting percentage (22.0%), tied for second among Washington skaters in goals (9) and assists (16) and third on the team in points (25). In 16 career regular-season games against Tampa Bay, Grabovski has registered eight points (2g, 6a) and 10 penalty minutes.

 

Getting Offensive –Washington scored four goals against the Rangers on Sunday, marking the fourth time in the last six games the Capitals have scored three or more goals. Washington has averaged 3.17 goals per game during its last six games and has posted a 4-2-0 record. The Capitals have scored three or more goals 19 times this season and have posted a 16-2-1 record in those games. Washington ranks tied for second in the Eastern Conference in average goals per game this season (2.87).

 

Feelin’ Gruby –Goaltender Philipp Grubauer earned his first career NHL win on Sunday against the Rangers, stopping 30 of 31 shots in Washington’s 4-1 win in New York. The Rosenheim, Germany, native became just the second German-born goaltender to record an

NHL victory, joining Thomas Greiss. Grubauer’s start was the second of his career and his first since March 9. In four career games, he has posted a 1-1-0 record with a 2.20 GAA and a .939 save percentage.

 

Ovechkin Closes In On Record –Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal in the first period on Dec. 7 against Nashville, marking his 136th career power-play goal. Ovechkin now sits two power-play goals shy of passing Peter Bondra (137) for first place on the Capitals all-time power-play goals list.
