Today’s Storyline

Washington scored a power-play goal in the first period on Friday against the Rangers, marking the Capitals’ 11th power-play goal in their last eight games (12/10-12/27). Washington is 37 for 143 (25.9%) on the power play this season, ranking first in the NHL. The Capitals have scored a power-play goal in nine of their last 11 games (12/3-12/27) and have scored 26 power-play goals in their last 26 games (11/1-12/27). Washington has scored 23 power-play goals at home this season, ranking first in the NHL.

The Capitals return to action today against the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center at 5 p.m.


Caps Prospects at WJC

Riley Barber (USA) – Scored a goal in the third period in the United States’ 6-3 win over Slovakia on Dec. 28. Scored a power-play goal in the first period in the United States’ 5-1 win over the Czech Republic on Dec. 26.

Connor Carrick (USA) – Registered an assist in the third period in the Unites States’ 6-3 win over Slovakia on Dec. 28. Earned an assist and registered four penalty minutes in the third period in the United States’ 5-1 win over the Czech Republic on Dec. 26.

Thomas DiPauli (USA) – Recorded an assist in the third period in the Unites States’ 6-3 win over Slovakia on Dec. 28. Earned an assist and was (+2) in the United States’ 5-1 win over the Czech Republic on Dec. 26.

Christian Djoos (SWE) – Scored a goal in the third period in Sweden’s 5-3 victory over Switzerland on Dec. 26.

Andre Burakovsky (SWE) – Earned an assist on Djoos’ goal in Sweden’s 5-3 victory over Switzerland on Dec. 26.

Year In Review – Alex Ovechkin has scored 62 goals in the 2013 calendar year (with two games still remaining), marking the most goals in the NHL. Ovechkin has tallied 97 points (62g, 35a) and 28 power-play goals in 84 games in 2013. In addition, linemate Nicklas Backstrom has earned 74 assists since January, marking the second most assists in the NHL (Sidney Crosby, 75). Backstrom has recorded 92 points (18g, 74a) in 86 games in 2013. The Capitals have posted a 47-32-7 record during the calendar year and have scored 258 goals, ranking fourth in the NHL. Washington is 81 for 307 (26.4%) on the power play in the 2013 calendar year, ranking first in the NHL.

 

Saint Nick – Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal and earned an assist on Friday against the Rangers, marking his 13th multi-point game of the season. Backstrom has scored a goal in two consecutive games (12/23-12/27: 2g, 1a) and registered 17 points in his last eight games (12/10-12/27: 4g, 13a). The Gavle, Sweden, native has tallied two or more points in six of his last 10 games. Through games of Dec. 27, Backstrom ranks tied for third in the NHL in points (44), tied for second in assists (34) and first in power-play points (24) and power-play assists (21). Since Backstrom entered the NHL in 2007-08, only three players have collected more assists (Henrik Sedin, Joe Thornton, Martin St. Louis).


Buffalo Hunters – Alex Ovechkin has registered 32 points (20g, 12a) in 30 career games against Buffalo, Nicklas Backstrom has tallied 21 points (8g, 13a) in 22 games against the Sabres and Jason Chimera has recorded 14 points (3g, 11a) in 16 games against Buffalo.


Feelin’ Grubi – Philipp Grubauer stopped 38 of 40 shots on Friday against the Rangers to earn his fifth win of the season (5-1-1). In eight games this season, Grubauer has registered a 2.18 GAA and a .937 save percentage. The Rosenheim, Germany, native ranks second among rookie goaltenders in save percentage and fifth in goals against average (min. 400 minutes played).


Back-to-Back Games – Washington begins its seventh set of back-to-back games this season on Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres. The Capitals complete the set on Monday against the Senators in Ottawa. Washington will play in 17 sets of back-to-back games in 2013-14 and is 7-2-3 in back-to-back games this season.
