Today's Storyline

The Capitals conclude a three-game road trip tonight in Carolina, a trip that capped off a road-heavy March schedule. Washington played 10 of its 16 games in the month of March on the road, with those 10 games representing 42% of Washington’s road schedule this season. The Capitals have gone 4-0-1 in their last five road games, outscoring their opponents 20-11 in that span.

Marching forward - The Capitals ended their busiest month of the season on March 31 at Philadelphia. Washington went 9-6-1 in its 16 games in March, outscoring its opponents 48-42 during the month. The Capitals scored 3.00 goals per game, tied for the seventh-highest mark in the NHL during March. Braden Holtby posted a 8-4-1 record with a 2.29 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in 13 games during the month.  

Streaking - Alex Ovechkin extended his point streak to eight games (8g-4a) with his league-leading 12th power-play goal on March 31 at Philadelphia. It marks his longest run since an eight-game streak from Oct. 27-Nov. 11, 2010. The last time Washington’s captain had a scoring streak longer than eight games was a nine-game streak from Jan. 27-Feb. 11, 2010. Ovechkin is currently tied for fifth in the league with 18 goals.

Against the Canes - Washington is 10-3-2 in its last 15 games overall against Carolina. The Capitals have gone 5-2-0 in their last seven road games against the Hurricanes.

400 - Nicklas Backstrom played his 400th career NHL game on March 31 at Philadelphia. No active NHL player that has played in 400 or fewer games has amassed more points than Backstrom’s 398. Backstrom ranks 16th all-time in Capitals history in points and surpassed head coach Adam Oates for 10th place in assists (291) with his assist on March 30 at Buffalo. He currently ranks tied for fifth in the league in assists (25). Backstrom ranks fifth in the league in assists since his rookie season (2007-08).

Making the transition - Tonight's game will feature two head coaches with the most points during their respective playing careers. Adam Oates compiled 1,420 career points as a player, the highest point total among all 30 NHL head coaches. Carolina head coach Kirk Muller ranks second with 959 career points.

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal last night to extend his point streak to eight games (8g-4a). It was his 18th goal of the season, ranking him tied for fifth in the league in goals. The goal was Ovechkin’s 12th power-play goal this season, the most in the NHL.
